Summer has arrived and with it comes heat, humidity and on occasion heavy rains.  It is really important to manage humidity and water issues in your basement if you want to keep your home comfortable and mold free.  Mold loves water whether it’s from moisture in the air or coming from a leak in the basement.   To help you control the moisture in your basement, be proactive and …

-          Run a dehumidifier – the RH (relative humidity) should be set to 55% or lower, it is important to read the instructions of your dehumidifier to ensure that it is set to optimal conditions for your environment and how the unit is installed

-          Be conscientious and address water leaks quickly

-          Make sure all downspouts (exterior) and drains (interior and exterior) are free and clear of any obstructions so that water can flow freely away from the home

-          If you have a sump pump, check it regularly to make sure it is in good working order and if it runs on a battery back-up, make sure the battery is working
